Game week: A 7-day preparation program for coaches

Step-by-step guide from Monday analysis to Saturday game.

Games aren't won only on game day; they are won through the preparation done all week. A systematic game-week program lets the coach manage both team preparation and opponent analysis in the best possible way. Below is a structured preparation calendar from Monday to Saturday.

Monday: Previous game analysis

Video analysis of the previous game is conducted. What worked and what needs correction on both ends is identified. Individual feedback sessions with players can be scheduled. This analysis shapes the training focus for the coming week.

Tuesday: Opponent analysis and scouting

The upcoming opponent is analyzed. Their main offensive sets, defensive scheme, key players and dangerous situations are studied. The scouting report is created and shared with the coaching staff.

  • What are the opponent's 2-3 most common offensive sets?
  • How is the starting unit fed?
  • How does their defense play, zone or man-to-man?
  • Who is the most dangerous player and how should they be contained?

Wednesday: Defensive practice

Opponent-specific defensive work is done. The opponent's key offensive sets are simulated and correct defensive reactions are shown in practice. If needed, the choice of Drop, Hedge or Switch is determined and drilled with the team.

Thursday: Offense and special situations

OB sets, late-game scenarios and press break are rehearsed. The team's strong offensive sets are tested against the opponent's defensive philosophy. Player roles and in-game responsibilities are clarified.

Friday: Light practice and video

A short and energetic practice is held without heavy physical load. Video clips of the opponent's key players are reviewed with players. The game plan is revisited to ensure everyone clearly knows their role and responsibility.

Saturday: Game day routine

The pre-game warm-up protocol is carried out. A short tactical reminder is held. The coach presents the final game plan in the locker room. Motivation and focus matter most; lean into confidence rather than excessive technical detail.
