Efficient practice plan: A template that saves time on court

A comprehensive guide from block structure to video integration.

A good practice plan accelerates player development, minimizes wasted time on the court and gives the coach peace of mind. Yet many coaches don't dedicate enough time to planning or don't use a systematic framework. In this guide we cover every component of an efficient practice plan.

The anatomy of practice blocks

An effective practice consists of sequential blocks. Each block's purpose, duration and content should be defined in advance. When filling a block, answer: What am I teaching here? How many minutes will it take? Why should players learn this?

Core practice template

  • Warm-up and activation (10-15 min): running, dynamic stretching, ball-handling.
  • Fundamentals block (15-20 min): passing, shooting mechanics or dribbling.
  • Tactics block (20-25 min): the day's topic, defensive scheme or offensive set.
  • Small-sided game (15-20 min): reinforce the concept with 3v3 or 4v4.
  • Scrimmage (15-20 min): 5v5 free play or directed.
  • Finish and review (5-10 min): summary, feedback and preview of tomorrow.

Time management: why it's critical

Court time is always limited. Pre-calculating the start and end times of each block eliminates the stress of watching the clock during practice. In the Athleon practice planner, just enter the start time and each block's duration; end times are calculated automatically.

Enrich content: video and tactics integration

Linking supplementary content to each block accelerates learning. You can attach a set from the Athleon tactics studio to a tactics block, add a video clip or image note. When players access the material before practice, court time is dedicated entirely to repetition and reinforcement.

Share and archive the plan

Sharing the practice plan with your assistant coaches and players strengthens communication and court readiness. Export as PDF, send to the group and ensure everyone knows what to expect. Archiving plans creates a valuable resource for seeing how much progress has been made during the season.
