From OB plays to the HORNS alignment: anatomy of an effective playbook.
A playbook is a systematic game book encompassing all of a team's offensive weapons, defensive sets and special-situation plays. A well-built playbook ensures players know what to do, allows the coach to make quick in-game decisions and helps the team play with consistency.
HORNS is a starting alignment with two big men at the high posts and three perimeter players in corners and wings. This alignment easily offers Pick & Roll, straight cut and double screen options. The point guard can attack either big, making it hard for the defense to predict which side to cover.
In the 5-out alignment all five players are beyond the three-point line. This keeps the paint completely open and creates a major advantage when a driver attacks inside. It also feeds the motion offense system; players create continuous threats through movement and cuts with or without screens.
Baseline and sideline out-of-bounds plays are often under-practiced by most teams. Yet in these situations defensive coordination is weaker and easy scores can be produced with a rehearsed set. Your playbook should include at least 2-3 baseline OB sets and 2-3 sideline OB sets.
Every coach needs last-second sets: quick two points when down one, three points in three seconds, three plus a free throw when down four. If these scenarios are not reinforced in practice they won't work in the game. Players knowing automatically what to do in critical moments reduces the decision-making burden under pressure.
In the Athleon tactics studio, draw each set, split it into phases and link it to your players. Organize sets into categories (offense, defense, OB, special situations) and collect them in your library. Share with your team in one click; players can watch the animation on their own devices.
