A successful scouting report lets you know your opponent on the court far better than by reputation alone. A report prepared systematically lets the coach base game plan decisions on data, helps players prepare consciously and contributes to making the right moves in critical moments.
Core components of a scouting report
- Team profile: overall style, tempo and starting alignment.
- Offensive analysis: most common sets and position-based preferences.
- Defensive analysis: man or zone, pressure points and weaknesses.
- Key players: strengths, weaknesses and foul tendencies.
- Special situations: last-possession offense and OB defensive sets.
Video analysis: an effective method
The best scouting is done through video. Watch the opponent's last 3-5 games and save important clips. Note especially: which offensive set they open with, when their most dangerous player gets involved and what their free throw and sideline OB plays are.
Key player analysis
Every opponent has 2-3 key players; correctly analyzing them determines the focus of the game plan. For each key player fill in: preferred position, best shooting zone, defensive weak point, foul tendency and response under pressure.
Sharing with players
The scouting report is valuable not only for the coach but for players too. Present information concisely, clearly and visually. Prefer bullet-point summaries supported by video clips over long text. Before a clip-watching session, ask players to identify 3 things they will pay attention to.
Keep the report current
Opponents also develop and change. A report you prepared at the start of the season may be outdated by the playoff phase. Add significant changes (new player, system shift, form drop) to your report and share with your team.
